About Not Your China Doll — A Groundbreaking Biography of Anna May Wong

Shortlisted for the 2024 Goodreads Choice Awards in History & Biography, named one of Publishers Weekly’s Top 10 Memoirs & Biographies for Spring 2024, and featured in Entertainment Weekly’s “Books We Are Excited to Read in 2024”, Not Your China Doll is the definitive biography of a cinematic pioneer.

Set in the dazzling world of 1920s Los Angeles and the golden age of Hollywood, Katie Gee Salisbury’s debut tells the untold story of Anna May Wong—a bold, stylish, and complex woman who broke barriers as an Asian American actress during an era of rampant discrimination. From her breakout role in The Thief of Bagdad to her protest of Hollywood's racist typecasting, Wong’s life is filled with radical choices, international acclaim, and a legacy that still resonates today.

“Before Constance Wu, Sandra Oh, Awkwafina, or Lucy Liu—there was Anna May Wong.”

This book brings her back into the spotlight she always deserved.
